Tonight's Council Meeting Cancelled - June 8

The City of Grosse Pointe Park cancelled its City Council meeting tonight, which is unfortunate. There is some discontent in the community regarding a recent decision that the city made about non-Park resident use of the Okulski theater. Having a meeting tonight would have given the residents a forum to inquire why this decision has been made. In fact, some think that residents should have had input prior to this change in park policy.

Non-residents will be able to use the theater for a $50 yearly fee.

  1. Laurie,

Do you know if the decision is final?

  2. It was written up in the Grosse Pointe News as a final decision. Made with no resident input.

  3. I think it's better that they charge non-residents a fee to use the theater if not enough residents are using it to keep it afloat. I would rather enjoy the theater than see it shut down because Grosse Pointe is too prejudice to allow non-residents in. Grosse Pointe is falling behind places like Birmingham, Troy, and Royal Oak, because we are stuck in our old ways. You can't move forward if you're always looking behind.

  4. Interesting...

Has the city tried marketing the theater? They could provide coupons to bring friends, advertise, create a better website, send out email updates, etc...Maybe a small booth or sign during the summer at the Saturday market...any business shoul be marketing their product, especially in these economic times.

  5. Is the non-resident use of the theatre restricted to the other GP communities or is it open to HW, SCS and Detroit?

  6. I was wondering the same thing. I guess you could send an email to clerk@grossepointepark.org

  7. It would be restricted to residents in just the Grosse Pointes. Harper Woods, St. Clair Shores, and Detroit residents would not be allowed.

  8. Why SCS and HW ? There is no reciprocity for the city parks (unless you're on a City Council, other elected official or a certain level of city worker).

All this being said, a $50 dollar "access fee" for the opportunity to see a movie in a wonderful, clean, quiet, unruly, facility is a great value.

  9. Prejudice has nothing to do with it. This policy concerns the private theatre of GPP allowing in residents of the other Pointes. How is that prejudiced?
What I feel it has to do with is giving away one of GPP's best assets for a cheap $50/family/year fee.
What other theatres are still around? The Shores Madrid is gone, the Beacon East is gone. When you have a choice of driving 32 miles round trip to the Star Gratiot and paying $9.25 a ticket or driving a couple of miles and paying $6.00/ticket - which would you choose?
The theatre has sold out several times in the past 6 months, and with the recent movies that appeal to a wider audience, and this new policy, it is certain to sell out more often. When Park residents are turned away at the door because non-residents are sitting in the seats, they are not going to be happy.
They could market better, or even increase the ticket price a couple of dollars. It would still be worth it.
This is OUR park, and it was arrogant of them to open it up to non-residents without any debate by the residents it directly affects.

  10. Please be aware that it is the policy of Grosse Pointe Park to provide businesses in the city with Park Passes. These passes have the company name on them and do not have gender, birthdate or individual/person's name on them.

In Grosse Pointe Woods, Park Passes are provided to members of all the city council's in the GP's, HW and SCS, along with the respective city's top-level employees. Passes are also provided to Wayne County commissioners, State representatives and even Carolyn Cheeks-Kilpatrick. Oh joy! Maybe Kwame and the brood will come to the GPW pool and hang out when mommy fly's the family home from Texas for the 4th of July!

I can understand providing passes to the other GP's, but SCSS and HW? What do they have to offer us in return?

  11. Today I received an email from the theatre management saying that due to everyone's concerns, they are not going forward with opening admittance to non-Park residents.
